So I finally decided to buy my IPhone, I didn’t want to go to the Apple Store in King of Prussia because its like 40 minutes away from me and they probably have the latest IPhone with the latest firmware so I decided to go to the AT&T store about 10 minutes away. I was worried at first because I didn’t call the store to see if they have the phone in stock, but I was reassured when I saw a pretty big sign right in front of their door saying that they have the IPhones in stock and had a special going that if you get one today, they will waive the activation fee.
When I went into the store the conversation with the rep there kind of went like this:
Me: I would like to pick up an Iphone today.
AT&T Rep: Sure, Do you have an account with us?
Me: No.
AT&T Rep: Do you want to create an account with us today?
Me: No.
AT&T Rep: Ok, let me go get the phone.
*Goes inside to the storage room*
AT&T Rep: I’m sorry, we are sold out.
Me: Oh really? (With a hint of sarcasm) Then you should really take down the sign that says “IPhones In Stock!!!” by the door.
Luckily for me there was another AT&T store three blocks down the street ( I don’t know why, doesn’t seem to be that smart of a move to open another store 3 blocks down, but thats another story.)
I went to the other store and asked for the IPhone again and I answered the same questions again, but this time I told them I was buying this as a gift for somebody. Then they asked me for the number of the person I was “buying” it for, so I looked at my contact list and found my cousin who has AT&T and gave them his number. Everything checked out and I went on my way home with my new IPhone. Later that night just for the heck of it, I wanted to see if the first AT&T store was really being shady or were they really out of IPhones. I decided to give them a call and I asked them if they had any IPhones in stock. The Rep replied “Of Course”.
I guess AT&T is supposed to be shady because they are getting the short end of 5 year exclusivity agreement with Apple. Even more reason to be shady considering that around 1/3 of the IPhones sold are being unlocked.
